Twitter Demographics
Chapter 6 of Charello’s Essentials of Social Media Marketing covers marketing with Twitter. Twitter is fairly similar to Facebook and Instagram in terms of crafting good posts. The base component of a post is text. Twitter allows up to 280 characters of text as opposed to the unlimited length allowed by Facebook and Instagram. The next component is a media attachment. Twitter supports regular photos, videos and GIFs. However, Twitter only allows four images per post. Twitter also limits videos to 140 seconds. Just like on other platforms, including some form of media improves the performance of the post significantly. One part of a post that is also important is hashtags. Again, just like Facebook and Instagram, hashtags can greatly improve a post. On Twitter, one or two hashtags is ideal. Any more than that and the post will be negatively impacted. It is important to keep the ideal number of hashtags in mind. Facebook posts perform best with one to three, Twitter one or two and Instagram five to 11.
One of the most interesting facts about Twitter I learned in this chapter was how small Twitter is relative to Instagram and Facebook. Twitter is used by around 22% of people. Instagram is used by around 37% and Facebook is used by about 69%. I had not realized just how large Facebook was, but I had also assumed Instagram and Twitter were similar in size. However, Instagram is more than 60% larger than Twitter. The next demographic that surprised me about Twitter was the gender distribution. Facebook has nearly 20% more female users and Instagram has nearly 40% more female users. Twitter has more than 14% more male users than female. I had previously assumed that the gender difference applied across all social medias, but evidently not. I am curious how much of a difference this will cause in terms of marketing strategy. It is also possible that platforms may have differing demographics, but the demographics targeted can be the same, so it is not a relevant concern

Danny those statistics are very interesting and knowledgeable. I feel like all social media platforms are all the same at this point, the only thing that makes other media sites different from each other is the amount of people who use each site. I find it so crazy how social media evolves almost everyday with the amount of new features the get installed into the apps and how much social media is a big influence with new era business owners. It was a point in time where no one had social media and had to market themselves through other people and making personal connections, now with social media, it makes promotion easier!
