Chapter 8: Marketing on Pinterest
Chapter 8 of Charello’s Essentials of Social Media Marketing discusses marketing with Pinterest. I personally have never used Pinterest, so this chapter covered entirely new information to me. A Pinterest post is called a Pin. Each Pin has an image or video, description and a link. Users can create boards to categorize and collect related Pins. Pinterest also offers seven unique Rich Pins for business users. Rich Pins are the same as regular Pins, but with extra features. Product Pins feature price information while Recipe Pins allow formatting the description of the Pin as a recipe instead of plain text. Article Pins allow including a short story, author, and headline. App Pins can be used to install an app directly from Pinterest instead of having to open the App Store manually. In order to include multiple images in a single pin, Carousel Pins are available. In order to bypass the extra step of visiting a company’s website to buy a product, Buyable Pins enable Pinterest users to purchase products directly from Pinterest. The last Rich Pin type, Shop the Look Pins, allow users to find and buy fashion or home decor products.
Pinterest users shown Pins based on a few factors. The first is Pin quality, which is determined by other Pinterest users. The more interaction there is with a Pin, the higher its Pin quality. The next is source quality. This is based on the site that is linked to by the Pin. If Pins that link to the site usually have high Pin quality, source quality will be high as well. The third factor is Pinterest rating. Pinterest uses an internal algorithm that determines what, where and how Pins will be placed on a user’s feed. Pins with high-quality images and good descriptions are usually rated highly. The last factor is called First Five Pins. This refers to Pinterest’s policy of prioritizing the first five Pins posted in a day for distribution. While it is possible that a Pin posted after the first five will be shown, it is less likely. Therefore, the first five posts of a day should be the best posts of the day.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI have also never used Pinterest so this chapter was new to me also. I thought this chapter gave a good overview on how the site worked itself and how to use it for different marketing and advertising tactics. I also talked about how the Pinterest algorithm worked which was confusing to me at first. Keep up the good work!
