Fall Break

Last weekend was fall break, which could not have come at a better time! This past week was very busy for me, so being able to pause and relax was incredible. The break was not totally relaxing though. One of my friend’s family has a cabin that we were allowed to use for the weekend. We had five people come out for the weekend. Due to scheduling limitations, we wound up taking three cars out to the cabin. The cabin is about three hours away from campus, so I left around 11:30 a.m. to arrive by 3:00 p.m., after factoring in gas and rest stops. However, the trip took almost five and a half hours! An hour into the drive, I stopped at a Walmart to pick up some items we forgot. I drove another hour and stopped at a gas station. At this point, there was just about an hour left of driving. However, my Google Maps has an issue where, while one destination is displayed, the app will navigate to another. When I restarted navigation after my gas stop, Google Maps directed me back to the Walmart I had just stopped. I did not notice since both destinations were about an hour away. I was cruising along, going wherever Google Maps guided me, so I did not notice until I was only 10 minutes away from the Walmart. I was definitely upset at the time, but two hours and $35 in gas later, I was at the cabin and ready to relax

Our time at the cabin was really fun. The cabin is beside a lake, so we drove around on a boat for a while. The boat is not very fast, but the lake is still fun to roam around on. However, the boat was a whole lot faster than the boat the last time I was at the cabin. Previously we used a manual paddle boat as the 9.9 horsepower boat was not in the water for the summer yet. We also had some good bonfires at night since a couple trees had recently been cut down. We did not do much over the weekend, but the downtime was much needed. Adventures Around Ada

The past week I have been feeling stuck in Ada, so I’ve been going out and just roaming around. I just hop in my car and roam around until I either find something cool or get bored. On one of my trips, I went north of Ada to explore at night. I didn’t find much cool stuff, but I did find a graffitied overpass. I stopped to check out some of the graffiti, but I also figured out it was an overpass for Interstate 75. It was very awesome to see semitrucks go rushing by at 70 miles per hour. I have seen regular trucks go by from a few feet away at 55 miles per hour, but it is a whole other experience with semitrucks going 70. The fact that I was under the overpass also meant that the acoustics were different. I can’t imagine what it is like to be an animal with no understanding of what is going on to when they hear cars going by. I do feel bad for them though. Finishing Jeep Projects

I drive a 2004 Jeep Wrangler. It has been a mostly reliable vehicle in the nearly two years I’ve owned it, but there have been a few things I’ve broken and needed to change. I like to take it off-roading and overlanding. The biggest deficiency is the ride height of the skid plate, as I have gotten high centered a good number of times. I wound up breaking my driveshaft at the rear differential over the summer, so took the opportunity to install a lift kit since it would require a new driveshaft. All in all, this endeavor wound up costing me around $2,000 in parts, ignoring new tools needed to install them. I got the lift installed prior to coming back to ONU, all that was left was installing a slip yoke eliminator (SYE), driveshaft and new pinion yoke. Getting these installed wound up taking a total of around 15 hours. The first task was installing the SYE. This entailed tearing apart my transfer case to remove the existing slip yoke output shaft and replace it with a fixed yoke output
